Goldfields Gothic | Artists at the Edge

EDGE galleries is thrilled to welcome three wonderful artists, Lauren Starr, Carlo San Giorgio and Daniel Longo who bring a combined maturity, sense of wonder and deep authenticity to their practices.

These are strong works with definitive visions and powerful themes. As befits our vision at EDGE, these artists will provoke, entrance and leave you with wondrous questions. Most works will be available for purchase during the exhibition.

The artists will speak about their work at a free artist talk on Sunday 6 August at 1pm at EDGE galleries.

Daniel Longo

CROOKED II, Geelong-based Daniel Longo’s exhibition involves expressive black-and-white photographs of distorted bodies representing the grotesque, revelations of shame and the compelling nature of the body. Through fragmented forms of expression and representation, grotesque bodies are used as symbols of shame. A theatrical and chiaroscuro environment is set for each body photographed, in order to explore themes such as shame, grotesquery and abjection. In visual and symbolic representations of shame, fragmented forms of the body facilitate gestures of concealment and revelation of shame.

Luminaries: Re-imagining women in the Australian goldfields, Bendigo-based Lauren Starr’s exhibition will include works from a new series. A luminary is something that gives light, such as a celestial object. It also refers to a person who inspires, who lights the way. Women living in the Australian goldrush period were such beacons of light, however there is very little evidence of them having existed. From artworks to official accounts and historical tellings, they are lost amongst the dust and masculine world of the goldfields. Through Lauren’s research, both into her own ancestors and historical documents, she has developed a connection with these pioneering females.

It is her intention that, through the uses of costume and photography, she can re-imagine the Australian landscape of the 1850s and artistically represent the women that lived there. To give them a voice and bring their ghosts to life.

Over the next year Lauren aims to create around 15 artworks that tell the untold stories of women on the goldfields and she is pleased to show the first 4-5 pieces in the series at the Edge Gallery for the Goldfields Gothic Festival. Works from her Momento Mori series will also be on show.

Carlo San Giorgio

My Gothic Heart, Maldon-based Carlo San Giorgio’s latest work explores the seductive dark beauty of old country towns steeped in rich history and mythology and their lure for so many through limited edition works of art, film, and free live performance events. Carlo’s work will feature in our evocative 1860’s original stone-walled cellar. The exhibition includes limited editions of original drawings, photographs and sculptures created for the performance film My Gothic Heart.
